How can Systems Mapping be used as a tool in Foresight?

The Sensemaking meetup is Systems Change Finland’s monthly meetup where we explore topics related to applied Systems Thinking and Complexity with interesting speakers. Instead of being one-sided lectures, our meetups are spaces where participants can also make sense about the topics with each other.

Decision-makers have to make decisions and define strategies in the operating environment dominated by uncertainty. War in Europe, energy prices and green transition, inflation, crisis of democracies and climate change are going to change the dynamics of the global — and local -systems. We are speaking about deep uncertainty that requires deep resilience. The Global X Network has used systems approach for two case studies; The world after Covid (March 2020) and The world after Ukrainian war (April 2022). In the May 22nd Sensemaking Meetup Leena Ilmola-Sheppard provided the participants a brief summary of the results, but the main focus of the discussion was on systems analysis as a tool for foresight and anticipatory strategising.

Leena Ilmola-Sheppard is a systems scientist, emerita, from International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) and she has dedicated her recent work for deeper understanding of systems resilience.
